Fellowships

Plan New Hampshire: The Foundation for Shaping the Built Environment, seeks to preserve the quality of life in our state by encouraging sustainable planning, design and development of the built environment.

One means of fulfilling this mission is through its Fellowship program. Each year, Plan NH awards several thousand dollars to New Hampshire students.

The Fellowship Program:

With support from the Alfred T. Granger Student Art Trust Fund (of the NH Charitable Foundation), this program awards students pursuing careers in:

  • Architecture
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Interior design
  • Studio art

Grants:

  • $2,500 for highly qualified sophomores, juniors or seniors
  • $5,000 for graduate-level architectural students who are planning careers aimed at improving the built environment in Northern New England.

Monies may be used for any educational expense, including room & board.

Criteria/Qualifications:

  • Undergraduates:
    • New Hampshire residents
    • Enrolled in accredited program of study in architecture, mechanical engineering, interior design or studio arts
  • Graduates:
    • New Hampshire residents
    • Enrolled in any NAAB-accredited program that leads to a Master's Degree in Architecture.
  • All:
    • Superior grade point average
    • Demonstrated general excellence in field of study
  • Also:
    • “activist” orientation showing excellent potential for having a positive effect on the built environment of northern New England
    • Demonstrated dedication to a life’s work in a chosen field
    • Leadership experience and ability to communicate and promote solutions
    • Breadth of skills, including flexibility and creativity required to work with diverse interest groups
    • Work experience in a related or relevant field
    • A New England focus that will most likely lead to application of the candidate’s skills and training to solving problems of the built environment in New Hampshire or Northern New England.

Candidates whose applications reflect the greatest potential for a future career that will positively influence some aspect of the built environment in Northern New England may be invited for an interview in Concord.  Part of this interview will consist of the candidate presenting a portfolio of her or his work to the selection committee.  All of those interviewed will be notified of award decisions in writing.

Fellowship recipients must agree to continue the plan of study described in her or his application during the first semester following this application period.

Applications are due no later than April 7, 2010. Qualified candidates may be asked to be interviewed and show their portfolios. 2010 recipients will be awarded at a special reception in late May.

  • Nicole Ward of Salem NH, studying Interior Design at Endicott College
  • Justin Paul Ware of Gilsum NH, studying Architecture at RPI.
  • LouAnn Fornataro of Nashua NH, who is pursuing a Masters in Architecture at the BAC
  • Braden Hunter of Concord NH, who is also pursuing a Masters in Architecture at the BAC.
